Inside the Race: Ep 01 Who races who

The America's Cup is one of the most prestigious trophies in international sailing, bringing together the world's best teams in a battle for supremacy on the water. While several teams may enter the competition, only two ultimately earn a place in the final showdown for the sport's most coveted prize.

The pathway to the America's Cup Match is designed to identify the strongest challenger before they face the defending champion. From the opening preliminary regattas to the elimination rounds of the Challenger Series, every race builds toward a single objective: the opportunity to compete for the America's Cup.

The Defender

At the heart of the competition is the defending champion, Emirates Team New Zealand.

As the winner of the previous America's Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand holds a unique advantage. Rather than competing through the qualification stages, the defender receives an automatic place in the America's Cup Match itself.

This means the team can focus entirely on preparing for the final while the remaining competitors battle through a series of events to determine who will earn the right to challenge them.

For every other team in the competition, the goal is clear: become the official challenger and secure a place in the final against the defender.

The Preliminary Regattas

The first stage of the competition is the Preliminary Regattas.

These events provide the first opportunity for all teams to race against one another in a competitive environment. The regattas allow crews to test their speed, refine their tactics, and measure their performance against their rivals.

While the Preliminary Regattas are an important part of the competition, they primarily serve as the opening chapter of the campaign. They give teams valuable racing experience and insight into the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents before the elimination stages begin.

For fans, the regattas offer an early glimpse of which teams may emerge as serious contenders for the America's Cup.

The Challenger Series

Following the Preliminary Regattas, attention turns to the Challenger Series.

This stage is where the pressure intensifies and teams begin to be eliminated from the competition. The challengers compete against one another in a series of races designed to identify the strongest team in the field.

As the rounds progress, the number of competitors is reduced until only one remains. That team earns the title of Challenger and secures the right to compete in the America's Cup Match.

Reaching this stage is a significant achievement, but the ultimate test still lies ahead against the defending champion.

The America's Cup Match

The competition culminates in the America's Cup Match.

This is the final, head-to-head contest between the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, and the Challenger that has emerged from the Challenger Series.

Unlike the earlier stages, where multiple teams compete, the America's Cup Match is a direct battle between two crews. The winner takes home the trophy and becomes the next holder of the America's Cup.

After months of preparation, qualification races, and elimination rounds, everything comes down to one rivalry, one opponent, and one trophy. It is the ultimate contest in sailing and the moment every team has been working toward since the start of the campaign.
